Anup Paudel Receives Award from Hilary Clinton

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton distributed awards to the 2010 Democracy Video Challenge winners at the State Department amid a special ceremony today. Mr. Anup Poudel from Nepal was one of the six winners. Anup’s video Democracy is Black was selected as winners from the South and Central Asia. This is the second time in a row that a Nepali has won this challenge. Other winners are from Ethiopia (Africa), Indonesia (East Asia and Pacific), Spain (Europe), Iran (Near East), and Colombia (Western Hemisphere). His Excellency Dr. Shankar P. Sharma, Ambassador of Nepal to the United States also attended the award ceremony at the State Department.
The Democracy Video Challenge was launched for the first year online and at the United Nations on the International Day of Democracy, September 15, 2008. According to the State Department the 2010 competition brought in more than 700 entries from 89 countries.
The eighteen finalists were selected by an independent jury.  The 2010 winners were selected by the online voting public and their prize is a 14-day visit to the U.S. with stops in Washington, DC, New York City; and Los Angeles that will include special screenings of winning videos in these three cities, exposure to U.S. TV and film industry professionals, and meetings with democracy advocates from government, media and civil society. 
The State Department also hosted a reception in honor of the six winners. Ambassadors and representatives from the six winning countries were also invited to the reception.
